November is the popular hiking season, TrailWatch has once again visited one of the Tseung Kwan O backyard trails with our users and conducted the Waste Audit. The hike started from Yau Tong and followed along the Wilson Trail Section 3 to Tiu Keng Leng. We all enjoyed the nature and fort ruins in an uplifting mood along the way; meanwhile, the participants paid a great effort in cleaning up the trail.

The amount of rubbish collected at this Waste Audit is over a thousand pieces, including 415 pieces of tissue paper and wet wipes.

Some participants who are very enthusiastic have participated in the Waste Audit for the third time in a row. As the repeated participants are relatively familiar with the process, they proactively reported the spots with serious rubbish issues by using the TrailWatch App’s incident reporting function, also they were happy to share their experiences and tips with the newcomers.

In just 4 kilometers, there were 2 abandoned trekking poles found.

As we planned to let the participants feel the vibe and characteristics of backyard trails, we specially arranged a route that passes through the resting and fitness places set up by the neighborhood, then continues to the Gough Battery. After “checking in” at the site, some participants suddenly realised that the ground was full of BB bullets, and they crouched down to try their best to pick up these plastic particles within the limited time.

The amount of anti-pandemic waste collected this time was less than before, but the total number of collected rubbish is increasing every time. We hope that all hikers can practise “Take Your Litter Home” and bear in mind the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace, and reduce the impacts on trails and the surrounding environments.
