TrailWatch has reached 100,000 users in 5 years and our users captured nearly a total of 700,000 photos by using the mobile app. In the celebration of the 5th anniversary of TrailWatch, we have invited artist Matthew Kwan as the curator of "Hike and Seek: TrailWatch 5th Anniversary Exhibition". Matthew selected the best photos of the best from TrailWatch's activity records and the unique scenery of Hong Kong's countryside will be presented by his works. Various outdoor activities will be available during the exhibition period, we would like to invite our users to join us to see the countryside from a new perspective. Let's Hike & Seek for the treasures in nature.
Results from the Collaborative Efforts of 100,000 TrailWatch Users
Are you one of those individuals who likes to record the distinctive journey through TrailWatch? Trails with the most footprints in the past 2,000 days will be showcased by projection at the exhibition. Matthew has selected photos from the 700,000 records and chose the ones can best represent our special countryside. This is an exhibition by you!
The exhibition projects favourite routes of users over a large Hong Kong map. Exhibition visitors not only can participate in an on-site treasure hunt for installations of native species but can also enjoy TrailWatch users’ perspectives and photographic framing of Hong Kong’s scenic countryside through their photos. As part of the exhibition program, we have invited spider specialist, Dickson Wong and fern enthusiast, Smith Wong to walk us through the wild and look for the germs of the nature around us.
Unveil the Unknown
Along with the exhibition, there will be a range of talks and excursions organised for participants. Dr. Wong Fook Yee, former Assistant Director of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, and the founder of the hiking website Oasistrek Teddy Law will share stories and knowledge of Hong Kong’s trails. Eco-instructor and spider expert Dickson Wong and ferns expert Smith Wong will host tours in the countryside to inspire participants to pay attention to the treasures of nature that were easily overlooked by the busy souls.
A number of publications and books on the topic of hiking and ecology will also be showcased at the exhibition for those enjoys discovering the countryside through books.
Another exhibit makes use of soundtracks from a nature field recording project produced by field recordist, AK Kan, bringing the sound of the nature of Hong Kong indoor. which will allow visitors to enjoy every single beat of nature. In addition, AK Kan will also host a nature sound recording tour and introduce basic recording techniques to the participants to TrailWatch users on 9 November 2019.
Let's Hike & Seek Together
Inspired by the spirit of TrailWatch, we organise a wide range of 5th-anniversary public activities with the theme “Hike & Seek” during November and December 2019. It includes the exhibition, talks, field trips, literature and music performance to broaden the senses, knowledge and imagination about hiking, and help users find more reasons to treasure Hong Kong’s countryside.
Throughout the years, our 100,000 TrailWatch users took endurance challenges on rough terrains, they sought friendships, sights, mental and physical health, even purposes of life through hiking. With our “Hike & Seek” activities that call on all five human senses, we invite all to revisit the original goals that take us to the mountains; we also invite city dwellers with less experience in hiking to start their journey of seeking with TrailWatch.
