Name: TrailWatch x WWF Hong Kong : Know more about Pui-O : Why there are Fly-tipping everywhere at Pui-O ?
Date: 18 May 2019 (Sat)
Venue:Pui O
This is the third year we walk along Pui-O and discuss the change of South Lantau with Andrew Chen form WWF Hong Kong. Since Hong Kong used to be a farming based society, most of the poems and buffaloes in the Pui O's wetlands were actually left by farmers. The buffalos therefore become the important manager of this wetland. With the unique and rich ecological diversity at Pui O, the green oily wetlands not only are the last paradise for buffalo in Hong Kong, also the habitat of various frogs, butterfly and migratory birds.

The story of Billy the cattle have also give us a lesson of how we treat the nature in a better way. In November of 2018, Billy, the well-known yellow cattle in Pui-O, died of intestinal obstruction. The veterinarian than discovered that his entire stomach was filled with plastic bags, which is enough to fill two trash cans. In addition to reminding people not to feed wild animals, this sad story also telling us that we should take own garbage, reduce the use of plastic bags and disposable supplies to avoid animals and cattle accustomed to finding food in human waste.
After listening to Andrew's sharing of various examples and loopholes in the law, participants learned that if government departments do not really regulate illegal dumping, the regulations are often ineffective. At the same time, this explained why the "Coastal Protection Area" can also see fly-tipping everywhere.

When damage have been cause by "North Development", how can the "Southern Conservation" by Lantau Tomorrow Vision can be implemented in the future? Next time when you find out any incident included fly-tipping at the country area, the TrailWatch's reporting function can easily help to follow up the incident in real time. When we continue to pay attention to Lantau Tomorrow Vision, we also can do our best to protect Hong Kong's nature at the same time.
