In 2024, we launched the Environment and Conservation Fund Trail Ambassadors Education Project. This program aims to impart the concepts of environmental conservation to primary, secondary, and university students through a comprehensive range of activities, both in theory and in practice. Up to now, we have conducted waste audits with over 400 students. During these activities, the students made unexpected discoveries and reflected deeply.

17/06/2024 – Carmel School (Shau Kei Wan Campus) at Shek O Back Beach
We collaborated with the Carmel School (Shau Kei Wan Campus) to visit Shek O Back Beach and conducted the waste audit for about two hours.
Despite the scorching heat, the students were still very engaged in clearing the litter on the beach, and the teachers had to call them several times before they could gather all the students at the assembly point.
In addition to the common litter found on the beach, the students discovered some rare items, including water-filled barriers and large floating objects. However, we left these large items on-site due to safety and weight issues and referred them to the relevant government department for handling.
On that day, around 100 students collected a total of 28.4 kg of litter, making it the school that collected the most litter in the Trail Ambassadors Education Project so far.

24/06/2024 – YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College at Tung Chung River
We arranged a two-hour waste audit with the YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College near the Tung Chung River.
Although the weather was overcast that day, it did not rain during the activity, allowing the students to collect litter in a more comfortable environment.
In addition to collecting litter on the main trail, the students also proactively searched for more in the surrounding areas.
On that day, about 25 students collected a total of 28 kg of litter. On average, each student collected 1 kg of litter, which was an encouraging result!
Most of the students participated in the cleanup activity for the first time, but their level of engagement exceeded our expectations. At the beginning of the activity, each group of students challenged each other, hoping that their group would collect the most litter, which was truly commendable.

28/06/2024 – TWGHs Mrs Wu York Yu Memorial College at Tsing Yi Nature Trail
Students from TWGHs Mrs Wu York Yu Memorial College participated in the three-hour waste audit event on the Tsing Yi Nature Trail.
The weather was extremely hot that day, but fortunately, the trail was well-shaded, allowing the students to remain fully engaged throughout the activity.
The students worked in groups and uncovered a lot of small litter, including cigarette butts and food packaging. In the end, they collected over 400 pieces of litter.
After the activity, many students expressed amazement at the number of cigarette butts they had collected. The sheer quantity also raised their concerns about the potential risk of wildfires.
The new school year will begin in September, and we will once again lead the students to visit different trails and conduct Waste Audit activities. We hope that more students will foster a sense of responsibility towards our environment with these events.
