Outdoor event = A lot of waste production?
Last December, TrailWatch celebrated the 5th Anniversary at Shing Mun Reservoir for the “Hike & Seek: Music in the Woods”event. Besides handicraft workshops and music performance, we prepared hot coffee and chocolate, as well as fruit and nuts for our participants. Since "Leave No Trace” is a key principle to protect our nature, even for outdoor events, we collaborated with different green groups to reduce waste at source.

Forgot your own cups? No worries! – GO CUP
Sometimes you may forget to bring your own reusable bottle or mug and it would be good to have cup lending service for you to drink without waste. On the day of the event, GO CUP lent out 62 reusable mugs to our participants to enjoy a cup of hot coffee and chocolate without using any disposable cups.

Refill water, without using disposable plastic bottle – Urban Spring Outdoor water station
Keep hydrated while going hike and seek in nature! Urban Spring provided an outdoor mobile water refill station at the entrance of the Butterfly Paradise to allow easy water refill for participants. A total of 55 liters of water was served, equivalent to approximately110 plastic bottles saved.

Best practice for Green event: reduce before recycle – The Green Earth
For an outdoor event with more than a hundred participants, we collected only 10 plastic bottles, 5 aluminium cans and 3.5kg fruit and coffee ground waste. We should always reduce waste at source and recycle if waste is generated. If you want to know more about the best practice of green event, you may refer to this handbook by the Green Earth.
TrailWatch once again thank you, everyone, in helping to make Hike & Seek: Music in the Woods a green event by bringing your own bottles and food containers. We hope everyone carry-on the “Leave No Trace” spirit when hiking.
