Backyard Trails Project – Internship Recruitment

The Backyard Trails Pilot Project is an initiative of TrailWatch, supported by the WYNG Foundation, to explore, study and promote backyard trails in Hong Kong. Backyard Trails are hiking trails located in greenbelt areas close to urban residential districts that provide recreational green space for nearby communities. We invite tertiary education students to apply for our project internship programme to assist us in our research.

Internship Programme – Project Intern for Backyard Trails Pilot Project

The Backyard Trails Pilot Project is an initiative of TrailWatch, supported by the WYNG Foundation, to explore, study and promote backyard trails in Hong Kong. Backyard Trails are hiking trails located in greenbelt areas close to urban residential districts that provide recreational green space for nearby communities. Some backyard trails, such as Nam Shan Mei in Diamond Hill, also provide connections between urban areas and country parks. 

 

The Backyard Trails Pilot Project aims to identify backyard trails throughout Hong Kong and study their usage in order to provide recommendations for improving their accessibility, including improving links between backyard trails and country parks. This pilot project will focus on 10 different trail areas to start with. 

 

We invite tertiary education students to apply for our project internship programme to assist us in our research. As an intern, you will gain valuable experience from working closely with our dynamic team. This role is particularly suitable to those who enjoy outdoor activities, the natural wonders of Hong Kong, and who take an interest in conservation, preservation, sustainability and community building in Hong Kong. Responsibilities:

Assist in the mapping and documentation of at least 10 backyard trails by traversing all branches of each trail while photographing and documenting trail features, such as:

– Wayfinding or connectivity issues at trailheads 

– Trail surface 

– Official amenities (if any)

– Any major safety hazards

– Points of interest 

– Community activities or community-built structures 

 

Desired Skills & Experience:

– Tertiary education students from the following majors may be most interested:

Geography, Urban Planning, Architecture, Ethnography, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Journalism, Media, Communications, History 

– Proficiency in written English and Chinese, fluent in Cantonese

– Detail-minded, observant, organized, energetic, proactive, fast learner and can self-manage

– Experience using MS Office application software and Google G-Suite environment

– Willing to work outdoors

– Passion for hiking, urban usage and environmental protection

 

Internship Details:

– Anticipated Internship period: January – March 2022 (8 weeks internship programme)

– 2 – 3 days a week (some weekends may be needed)

– The internship will be a mixture of remote work with some in person meetings with the project supervisor

– The internship will be remunerated at an amount determined by reference to number of days of work and other factors
