What a waste!

HK Wasteland co-creator Ryan Keller set out to create a video capturing his favourite Hong Kong spots using his newly-purchased drone. But while going through footage of Big Wave Bay, he saw something that shocked him: trash. Lots of it. He decided to do something about the situation and reached out to his childhood friend, Ben Robertson-Macloed, and together they began working on “HK Wasteland”.

Through HK Wasteland, Keller hopes to uncover what he refers to as an “unspoken problem”, highlighting differences between Hong Kong’s gazetted and non-gazetted beaches. One important dissimilarity is that the former are cleaned daily, whereas the latter, which includes the likes of Trash Bay, are often polluted. The visual stunner also touches on the work that is being done by individuals fighting for change, and the government’s reluctance to identify the sources of pollution and seek long-term solutions.

Hongkongers throw away more than 10,000 tonnes of rubbish each day, and officials warn if this number doesn’t go down, the city’s three landfills could fill up years before the anticipated 2020. Most TrailWatch users should be no strangers to showing respect and appreciation for nature, but, sadly, the same cannot be said for every Hongkonger. Watch this video to see how our homeland is slowly deteriorating into a “wasteland”, and share it with your friends, family and acquaintances to show everyone why something needs to be done.
