Note from “Megaphone” – Look But Don’t Touch

When we go hiking, we often see hand written or carved wishes and names on rocks or historic buildings. However, expressing love or recording important moments does not mean we need to destroy nature or public properties.

Writing, scribbling or etching on historical structures or natural rocks can cause irreversible damage. According to the Summary Offences Ordinance, Cap 228, “Any person who without lawful authority or excuse — in or near any public place defaces any rock or any roadcutting by carving or otherwise marking thereon any letter, character, figure or device; shall be liable to a fine at HKD$500 or to imprisonment for 3 months.”

We should all work together to protect our precious cultural heritage, to cherish and respect the history of Hong Kong. Avoid climbing, touching and drawing on the relics to preserve their original appearance so that more people can see them and understand the important history of Hong Kong.
