Note from “Megaphone” – Mercy Release Has No Mercy to Nature
Previously, Megaphone has reminded everyone not to feed wild animals and Let the Wild Boars Stay Wild. How about “mercy release”? Have you ever thought that it could result in an ecological disaster?
In accordance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, Cap. 169, any person who abandons or improperly releases animals could be convicted of cruelty to animals, which carries a maximum penalty of 3 years imprisonment and a $200,000 fine. Aside from the fact that freshwater creatures cannot survive in sea water, releasing captive animals into the wild is not appropriate because those animals may not be able to adapt to the environment. What is even worse is releasing invasive animals into Hong Kong’s nature, which threatens the local ecosystem. Such animals could be unnatural predators for the native animals, cause extra competition for food and habitat or spread diseases and parasites to local wildlife, which could result in the death of native species. Although releasing animals into the wild may seem like a kind thing to do, it is sometimes not the way to help animals.
