Note from Megaphone – Be a Nature-Friendly Camper
Camping has become a popular activity in Hong Kong, especially under the pandemic. Bringing away your own litter is not a new concept to many campers. Under Leave No Trace principles, equally important is the need to be considerate to other visitors and to avoid causing damage to the environment.
Recently, Megaphone was upset to see many campers start campfires on the hill while camping. Every year, more than 100 hillfire cases are reported, and almost all are caused by human negligence. Although campfires can build a unique experience for campers, it is illegal to light a fire in Hong Kong country parks except in designated barbeque areas or campsites. Lighting a fire illegally not only vandalizes natural features, but can also cause danger to oneself and others. Even when starting fire at a designated area, it’s important to ensure the fire is completely extinguished before you leave to avoid the chances of it turning into a hill fire.
Instead of having campfires, Megaphone suggests campers enjoy nature by lying on the greens, admiring the stars in the sky and share these wonderful moments with friends. Let’s love our nature and be a responsible camper!
